How this works

The rule
Your monthly housing payment (principal + interest + taxes + insurance, "PITI") should be ≤ 28% of gross monthly income. We invert it: required income = PITI ÷ 0.28 × 12.
The data
Typical home value per metro from Zillow ZHVI; the live 30-year fixed mortgage rate from FRED (Freddie Mac PMMS); local median income from the Census ACS. All refreshed automatically.
Honest limits
Property taxes, insurance, HOA, and your actual rate vary by parcel and credit. This is a fast first-pass, not a loan pre-approval.
