How we get your FIRE number per town

The 4% rule
FIRE number = annual spending × 25. Live on $40k/yr → you need ~$1.0M; live on $24k/yr → ~$600k.
Spending from cost of living
We derive each town's annual cost of living from its typical home value (Zillow ZHVI): owner-equivalent housing ≈ 5%/yr of value, and housing is ~38% of a typical US budget (BLS), so total ≈ housing ÷ 0.38.
Coast FIRE
If your current savings alone compound to a town's FIRE number by your retirement age, you've hit Coast FIRE there — no more saving required.
